Create® is a new type of health plan designed around integrated health systems. Members who choose Create belong to the health system they select during enrollment, and remain with that health system for the plan year.
But what exactly is a health system? A health system, sometimes called an integrated delivery system, is group of affiliated doctors, hospitals, and facilities, organized together under one parent company.
Some background: For several years, hospitals have been merging in an attempt to streamline their operations and increase their buying power through volume – and subsequently lower their costs. Today there are very few stand-alone hospitals. Most are part of a bigger hospital group, or health system.
Health systems have also been buying up physician groups and doctor practices, who agree to join health systems to escape the burdens of increased regulations and administrative costs.
Create injects competition into the health system model and simultaneously builds loyalty between health systems and their patients. How? Today, most care is fragmented across islands of care. Create instead keeps a patient loyal to a single integrated health system during the entire plan year, incenting providers to lower their prices and to continuously improve healthcare quality to grab and then keep market share from the competition.
With Create, employees in employer-sponsored plans choose between multiple health systems available to them during open enrollment. Families opt-in to the system that best meets their preferences on criteria such cost, quality, location, availability of doctors, and more. They then receive all of their medical care from their chosen health system for the plan year. The health system’s cost and quality performance determines whether it wins or loses that entire family and their healthcare dollars every year at enrollment.
In this way, Create benefits everyone:
- Employees pay less out of their paycheck for their medical benefits
- Employers offer more choice and better plans at lower cost
- Doctors are better able to coordinate care
- Families and doctors build a more clinically rewarding relationship
- Health systems that perform keep members and their families in their delivery system
